Ground creep is first recognizable by the crescent growth of trees and the hooking of rock layers, and sometimes by slumping on lower slopes, plaques, and increased erosion during heavy rains. The rate of creep is on the order of one to two inches per year, but may be significantly less. Emergency and hazard alarms are used to manually trigger an alarm in the event of an acute emergency or hazard. These can be acoustic signals or voice announcements: "Thirty-eight hours playing the accordion on the rock wall without a break".
